Split sole help needed.

Split sole help needed.

Postby fluffy270 » Fri Sep 01, 2017 3:39 pm

Hi all,
I have a set of VIP Custom 71 split soles which is missing the 8 iron. Now I don't expect to ever find a matching 8 iron for this set. But I do need to find something close.

The main difference with this set is they have long hosels ( approx 80mm from the heel, much like Mac models from the late 50's & early 60's)
Other split sole models I've encountered have a shorter hosel and a very different insertion depth.

It would be a huge help if any of you with split sole macs could measure your hosel length so that I can then figure out which model I need to start searching for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks J.

Hey Fluffy,

I've got RST1's, RST2's and RT9's and they measure 3.15"...They all have pinned/hozels shafts

Hope that helps

That's a great help thanks, which of those has the least offset?

I'd say the center of the shaft is looking @ the 1st groove

Cheers Mashie, I can work with that.
I only ask as I picked up a set of R9MT's a couple of years back which had what I can only describe as an offensive amount of offset, ever since have been a little gun shy of Macs from that era.

You can also look for MT1 split soles. I think those are from '69. I have a set that were converted from aluminum shafts. Also, the more available Nicklaus VIP split soles make a good match as well.

Anything with an 'A' suffix would indicate aluminum shafts - such as MT1A or RT1A.
