Removing Screws in the bottom of Persimmon Shafts

Mostly for Mike, but anyone feel free to chime in.

I'm trying to pull the shafts on some Spaldings I have, but I can't seem to get the screw out that is in the bottom of the head going into the bore-through shaft. What is the best way to handle this? Do you drill through it with a special bit?

Any advice appreciated!

Getting the right screwdriver on it helps.
Really cleaning out the grooves helps.
Heat the tip of your screwdriver with a blowtorch helps.
